At Livin’ The Dream Music Academy we believe that when a musician achieves high levels of competence, they are in an ideal position to be able to ‘give back’ through teaching and discovering / developing up and coming talent.  Through this process not only does the student benefit learning from an experienced professional but the teacher also benefits while helping others on their music journey; its win / win.  Please read about our teachers and their musical journeys to date…

Ty Coates

Singing, Drums, Guitar, Bass Tuition, Live Performance & Recording Coaching

Ty started singing publicly at the tender of 5. Later he began performing as a solo act, playing guitar and singing in local pubs. He joined his first band at 14 and worked almost every weekend doing “weddings, parties, anything”. At 16 he landed a gig on drums in a resident rock band playing 5 nights a week. At 17 he formed, managed and acted as booking agent for his own band that played anywhere and everywhere. During his time in Perth whilst fronting popular band Flash Harry, Ty won the “Most Outstanding Male Vocalist Award” two years running at the Coca-Cola Bottlers Music Awards. Ty also began his session career, which included performing many jingles for TV and radio.

In order to further his career, Ty relocated to Sydney. After playing around Sydney and up & down the east coast, he was discovered by the famed Party Boys while playing their support. Paul Christie called Ty the next day and invited him to join the band as lead singer. He started rehearsals for their next tour and formed a song writing partnership with Alan Lancaster (Status Quo) and John Brewster (The Angels). Together they formed The Bombers and wrote the songs for the new album entitled “Aim High”. Ty moved on the form his own band Boys Downunder for a bit of fun and to explore the big harmony sound that goes with having two outstanding female vocalists as back-up. After forming and playing in bands Brainchild and TCB (Ty Coates Band), Ty re-joined Alan Lancaster in the Lancaster Bombers, playing guitar and sharing the vocals with Alan. Throughout this entire period, Ty was also a most sought after session singer, performing some of the instantly recognisable jingles such as the Who magazine jingle.

Ty has recently returned from the USA and the UK to continue writing and playing live, as well as forming Livin’ The Dream Music Academy with long-time business partner Caz Rae.

Over many years of singing and playing, both live and in the studio, as well as studying with several vocal coaches over the years plus his own research and personal experience, Ty has formulated his unique “Vocal Bridging Method”. This dynamic program enables singers to greatly extend their vocal range, while preserving their voice and strengthening their projection and control.  It also totally clarifies how to use the voice, how the vocal instrument works, what it looks like and how best to reach the individual singing potential. Ty is also teaching guitar and drums at the academy.

Ty’s goal is to continue his musical journey, whilst giving back to young aspiring musicians and the industry he loves. He has successfully taught absolute beginners through to high profile professionals for many years, teaching everything from bare basics to live performance, recording techniques, voice preservation and musicianship.

Caz Coates

CazSinging Tuition, Live Performance & Recording Coaching

Caz simply remembers always singing from very early childhood and as a child she joined her local church choir, naturally singing the harmonies.  In primary school Caz was a lead performer / dancer with school showcase performances and learnt Jazz Ballet and piano.  At age 12 she recorded and performed her first solo, The House of The Rising Sun in her sixth class end of year school production called Cindy’s Happy Days; a rock version of Cinderella based on the movie Grease.

Three very devoted teachers encouraged & inspired Caz’ to sing and perform which opened her eyes to the real possibilities of being a singer.  Throughout her teens she sang for family & friends and did a variety of session & recording work and began writing her own original music.  By 22 she had fronted several Sydney bands, Zig Zag, Desire and Love Sex & Money and also graduated from Kanga’s School Of The Natural Voice.

Always looking to better her vocals, Caz began private vocal tuition with Ty Coates.  Her goal was for an edgier rock sound and not long after working with Ty using his ‘Vocal Bridging Method’ she won 2nd place at a hard rock Cobra Club singing completion.  She then joined the notable Sydney band the Boys Downunder featuring Tyrone Coates with Dario Bortolin, Angelo Tsoltoudis, Dave Bennett & Peter Heckenburg and other backing singer, Trisha Kerr.

Caz formed and fronted her own band, Smokin’ Rosie with talented players Ray Shek, Paul Greenwood & Fabio D’Antone, writing originals with Ray Shek. She then formed the duo Steam Train, to focus more on writing. Booked solidly they played all over NSW.  During this time Caz began teaching singing; specifically teaching the ‘Vocal Bridging Method’ with Ty Coates, which had already allowed her to extend her range, increase her power & sing without strain or damage.

Recently returned home from the US & UK, Caz continues to play live & write originals, and has co-created Livin’ The Dream Music Academy with long time business partner, Ty Coates. With extensive live, recording & performance work, Caz is passionate about music and helping others on their musical journey.

Special highlights for Caz have been recording backing vocals for the Lancaster Bombers, singing on the Status Quo remake of Matchstick Men with Alan Lancaster, Ty Coates & John Brewster and backing vocals for TCB (Ty Coates Band) with Ty Coates, Dave Bennett, Matt Cornell & Jamie Hooker.  Additionally writing and recording her own songs is always amazing good fun.

Caz’ focus now is helping others realise their music dreams through not only singing tuition but passing on invaluable industry knowledge on performance and recording thorough workshops, group and 1 to 1 classes so others can learn without trying to figure it all out for themselves.
